… nothing new. It showed general resentment against the British who refused to part with power. His party had stressed to him he should also make the Russians aware of Indian public feeling which was dangerous to the Allies so that Moscow could tender wise advice to the British Government.21

This time, according to Uttam Chand, Rasmuss gave Silver more money, with the two men having a discussion about the currency. Rasmuss would have preferred to give Silver Pound notes, but Silver told Rasmuss that, although Britain owned India, Sodhi had found it impossible, both in Bombay and Lahore, to convert Pound notes into Indian Rupees. Silver would later tell Uttam Chand that he knew a Sikh pilot who was making air mail flights to England and could convert them there. But whether this was another Silver tale or the truth is hard to say. Uttam Chand says the German on this secret trip gave Silver 50,000 in Afghan Rupees and 500 gold sovereigns. While Silver did not much like having gold he knew that, unlike the Pounds, there was a means of using them, for the previous consignment had been given by Sodhi to two trusted Kirti party workers to be sold through goldsmiths a few sovereigns at a time to fund party activity.

So what became of this cash? We do not know. It does not feature in the statement of Axis money Silver received which was prepared by the British following Silver’s confession, nor is it mentioned by Sodhi. The implication that Silver kept the cash for himself is compelling. This trip was certainly very secret, indeed so secret that Quaroni did not know anything about it. This explains this curious telegram from Quaroni to his Foreign Office on 24 November 1941:
